Abstract

This research undertakes a comparative analysis of the attributes of Prophet Yusuf (Joseph) as depicted in the Quran and the Book of Genesis. By examining the textual narratives of both scriptures, the study seeks to identify similarities and differences in the portrayal of Yusuf's character, focusing on his virtues, challenges, and spiritual growth. The research aims to contribute to a deeper understanding of the shared and distinct perspectives on this significant biblical figure within Islamic and Judeo-Christian traditions. Both texts highlight Yusuf's exceptional virtues, including his unwavering faith in God, integrity, and wisdom. His ability to interpret dreams is a significant aspect in both scriptures, emphasizing his spiritual insight and divine connection. The stories in both the Quran and Genesis detail the numerous challenges Yusuf faced, such as betrayal by his brothers, wrongful imprisonment, and trials of seduction by Potiphar's wife (Zulaykha). These challenges test his faith and character, ultimately leading to his spiritual and social elevation. Yusuf's journey from a favored son to a position of high authority in Egypt illustrates his spiritual growth and the fulfillment of divine promises. Both texts depict his story as one of divine providence and moral triumph. The Quran focuses more on Yusuf's unwavering faith and reliance on God throughout his trials, presenting his story as a testament to divine wisdom and mercy. In contrast, the Genesis account provides more detailed familial and socio-political contexts, emphasizing the human elements of the narrative. The Quranic narrative is concise and thematic, aiming to impart moral and spiritual lessons to the reader. The Genesis account is more detailed and descriptive, providing a comprehensive historical context and character development. The Quranic story of Yusuf often emphasizes moral lessons and the importance of patience, forgiveness, and trust in God. The Genesis account, while also highlighting these themes, places a greater emphasis on the interpersonal relationships and their complexities. This comparative analysis reveals that while both the Quran and the Book of Genesis offer rich and multifaceted portrayals of Prophet Yusuf, they each bring unique perspectives and emphases to his story. By understanding these similarities and differences, readers can gain a deeper appreciation of the shared heritage and distinct teachings within Islamic and Judeo-Christian traditions regarding this significant prophetic figure.
